Both companies have a solid reputation for educational programming, artistic quality, and community involvement, and each celebrates a tenth anniversary in 2005. RAICES de Mi Tierra was organized in 1995 by Roxana and Jose Borrego at CSU Sacramento with a mission to preserve Traditional Mexican Dance. The Ballet Folklórico Nube de Oro was organized in 1994 by area dancers to promote traditional dance and instill self-esteem in youth—it received nonprofit status in 1995.

Beginning in May 2005 the companies will unite their strengths to advance, preserve, and promote Folklórico education. "This united front will be particularly helpful in the education of our dancers as the groups will focus on ages and levels," says Martha Soto, President of Nube de Oro. Although the groups will remain separate entities, their goals and their emphases combined will create a new educational space which will enrich both companies and provide a sharing of resources and energy.

The dance organizations have collaborated in the past to bring maestros of Folklórico to the Sacramento community through the statewide Danzantes Unidos Festival. In 2002, under the direction of Jose Borrego, Managing Director of RAICES, both groups and Folklórico Latino de Woodland organized and hosted the largest annual gathering of Folklórico dancers in the Sacramento area. The festival, which drew over 1,700 folkloristas from California, Oregon, Washington, Texas, and Arizona, included over 40 dance workshops and presentations by horsemen, lariat performers, 26 performing dance groups, as well as a performing group from Mexico.

"Long ago, Nube de Oro included a Future Goals statement: ‘to help create a school of cultural education along with others interested in the same goals.' With RAICES' invitation, we are now implementing this goal in the Sacramento Cultural Arts Center. We can actually see our future goals begin to materialize," says Irma Abella, Artistic Director of Nube de Oro. "Both RAICES and Nube's efforts will be a positive step in advancing Sacramento's artistic development in Folklórico education."

" We look forward to working together with the Nube Board and Dancers to make the Sacramento Cultural Arts Center a unique place that will foster Cultural Dance for many years to come," says Roxana Borrego, Artistic Director of RAICES de Mi Tierra.

The Sacramento Cultural Arts Center will open its doors in May 2005. Cultural arts groups interested in residing at the center or renting the space should contact Jose Borrego at the Sacramento Cultural Arts Center at (916) 428-3328.
